CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THOSE INVOLVED IN THE FAIR!
NC Central Region 3A Science and Engineering Fair

About Our Fair

The 2021 NC Central Region 3A Science and Engineering Fair will be held virtually on Saturday, February 6th for Elementary students (grades 3 - 5) and Saturday, February 13th for Junior and Senior students (grades 6 - 12). We are so excited to announce a partnership with Wake Tech Community College this year and into the future. Region 3A includes Durham, Franklin, Granville, Johnston, Nash, Vance, Wake, Warren, and Wilson counties. Registration is now open. All students must register for the fair by January 22, 2021 at 5:00PM EST. We will be hosting a virtual science fair this year. Students are asked to create an electronic presentation instead of a tri-fold board.

If you are interested in registering for the North Carolina Student Academy of Science happening on Feb. 6th, register here by Feb. 2nd: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSctC6uLspzqW6_RYgU49fDm-FVuhDrwqLYGZDKNonqeodRV-A/viewform

Fair Information

Students in grades 3-12 who win at the science and engineering fair held at their school or their school district qualify to attend the regional fair. If a school or school district does not have a pre-qualifying fair, and a student wants to participate in the regional fair, an administrator or a science teacher may sponsor the student’s registration; the student will represent their school at the fair.

At the regional fair, students compete in the Elementary, Junior (Middle School), and Senior divisions. Students who are judged winners at the regional fair become eligible to participate in the statewide science and engineering fair held virtually. The NC Central Region 3A fair is affiliated with the Intel ISEF (International Science and Engineering Fair) and has the distinct privilege of selecting one senior project to compete in the International Fair.

While the fair will be hosted virtually, much of the student research experience will remain the same, including safety protocols for research, forms and permissions. Presentation requirements are different this year to accommodate the virtual experience. Please ensure that students fully review the requirements for the project presentation as they are different from prior years.

To complete registration, students will be asked to upload ALL of the following documents (see: "useful links" to the right of this webpage for these documents):

  1. Fillable abstract form

  2. Participant signature page

  3. ISEF forms: checklist for adult sponsors (1), student checklist (1A), approval form (1B), research plan*

  4. Project presentation

  5. NCSEF quad chart

  6. OPTIONAL: One minute video and up to four pages of lab notebook

* Additional ISEF forms may be required depending on the nature of the project
